There are many ways to help you remember faster and longer. In this post, I will share with you some tricks that I have been teaching my students. Many of my students have improved their memory and done better in school. My tricks are fun and easy to apply. They will surely work if you practice them frequently.
Long-term memory and short-term memory are the two main types of memory. Most of us try to remember things as quickly as possible, and then we soon forget them, which refers to short-term memory. We use our short-term memory to keep a small amount of information.
On the other hand, long-term memory means we remember things for a long period of time. The amount of information can be huge when it comes to long-term memory. Sometimes it can take a lot of effort to retain them.
Knowing how to remember faster and longer is necessary because it can improve your performance at work or school and help you in your daily life.
Let’s explore some tricks to boost your memory together.
1. Visualization
I have taught many students about this trick, and it never disappoints me. Visualization means you imagine a story in your head. The story does not have to make sense. In other words, it can be funny or silly. For example, you can imagine a horse is wearing high heels to help you remember the words “horse” and “high heels.” The funnier your story is, the longer you can remember it. Of course, you can also imagine serious stories if you are not a humorous person. You do not have to follow any laws or standards when imagining. It is your mind, and you can imagine anything you want to help you remember things. Visualization not only improves your long-term memory but also enhances your creativity.
2. Chunking
Chunking is another word of division. This trick works when you have to remember long information, such as numbers. For example, it can be difficult to remember “459851516.” However, it becomes easier when you break this number into small pieces, “459-851-516.” You can see and remember better when it is in groups. This trick is used to remember phone numbers, identification numbers, social security numbers, pin numbers, etc.
3. Songs
If you are a music lover, this trick is for you. You can use music to help you remember things by creating your own melodies or changing lyrics of songs. The new lyrics should include the information that you need to remember. Same as visualization, you can create any songs that you like. You do not have to follow anyone’s rules. Just remember do not use bad words if you want to share them with other people. I will share with you a song that I use to teach my young students how to remember seven continents of the world. It is pretty fun, and my students love it. You can sing this song based on “Old McDonald had a farm.” Click here for the song.
Here we go.
There are seven continents. I-E-I-O. Africa and Antarctica. I-E-I-O. North America, South America. Europe and Australia. My teacher is from Asia. There are seven continents. I-E-I-O.
4. Mnemonic
This trick can help you remember a group of words better. All you need is to make a sentence or poem that includes the first letter of each word to remind you of the entire word. It may sound complicated, so let’s look at an example that I use to teach my students.
In this example, we will try to remember five oceans of the world. They are Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Southern Ocean, Arctic Ocean, and Indian Ocean.
You can make any sentences that include red letters, such as
Pacific Ocean - Pandas Atlantic Ocean - And Southern Ocean - Snakes Arctic Ocean - Are Indian Ocean - Interesting
These tricks work differently based on each person’s learning style, which means some people can remember better when applying these tricks into their lives, and the others cannot. Remembering faster and longer can be challenging in the beginning. However, if you practice them frequently, I believe you will be able to improve your memory and remember better.
Please feel free to discuss these tricks or tell me how they work for you at the PHOrum. If you want to practice or learn more about this topic, schedule an appointment with me now.
